The Hawaiian canoe, Hokule’a and it’s sister voyaging canoe, Hikianali’a are currently on a 3 year journey to travel the world’s oceans to bring connection and awareness of the need to protect the oceans and the many people’s who live on or near them. Last week a conference was held in Samoa attended by U.N. Secretary Ban Ki Moon & other national leaders. Secretary Moon and the President of the Republic of Palau sailed with Hokule’a and Hikianali’a. Schools all over the world are following the 3 year voyage which is fully available on line through Facebook and Twitter. On the website www.hokulea.com you can find how your school & your child can communicate with the canoes and ask questions or talk with the navigators. These canoes are using only traditional navigation tools with the swells, winds, birds, currents, stars for guidance. Hikianali’a is equipped with the latest technical communications devices. (Some of us remember when Hokule’a came through the Golden Gate and moored at the Hyde Street Pier in SF in the 1990’s.)
