This year 16 Hula Halau (schools) will come together at the Alameda County
Fairgrounds in Pleasanton to compete in a tribute to the “Merrie Monarch”,
King David Kalakaua, who is credited with bringing hula back into the spotlight
at the end of the 19th century.
Each group brings its own live music and the musicians compete as well. There are groups coming from Hawaii to join with our California and Nevada and Washington State groups in this year’s competition. The costumes are gorgeous and the scent of tropical flowers imbues the hall with fragrance. Food, shave ice, heirloom Hawaiian jewelry & crafts are available for purchase. The competition includes ancient and modern styles of hula in multiple catagories. You will see bold young men and strong young women, beautiful children, graceful gracious ladies and seasoned elders in traditional and original hula settings. A true joy to behold. Go to Northern California Kumu Hula Association and look for the competition.
