The 1943 film, National Velvet, comes out of mothballs for this weekend at the New Parkway Theatre, 474 24th st., between Broadway and Telegraph in Oakland.  Phone:  510 658-7900.  It shows at 4pm on Friday, July 12 and at 12:30pm on Saturday, July 13. Free parking. It is part of New Parkway Family classics.  This film shows a very young Elizabeth Taylor and a young horse trainer former jockey played by Mickey Rooney. The story is inspiring and very much for any girl who wants to make her mark in the world and how she does it, in this case, is through jockeying a wonderful horse in the Grand National Steeplechase although girls are not allowed to be jockeys at this time and place.  You’ll see a young Angela Lansbury as the older sister, Butch Jenkins, Jr. as little brother, Donald Crisp is dad.  The cast is a who’s who of 1940’s stars, American and British.  The music score is by Ralph Vaughn Williams and includes his lush arrangements of “Greensleeves” and 3 English folksongs.  It compliments this film beautifully and I must say that as a 10 year old, seeing this film for the first time, I fell in love with the music and it led me into a lovely world of English folk music and into Vaughn Williams’ classical music pieces.  This film is in gorgeous technicolor at a time when American films were made only in black and white, supposedly because of the war effort.
